A Barolo with almost three decades in bottle, from the Bussia cru of Monforte d'Alba and one of Piedmont's great houses. Aldo Conterno's family history goes back five generations, and the estate's cru Barolos come from the Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello plots within Bussia. The same family's straight Bussia bottling from 1997 gets you into that house without paying for the top cuvée. It's 100% Nebbiolo, dry and full-bodied, made in a traditional way with elegance rather than brute force. Mature Barolo from a name like this doesn't turn up often. Stand the bottle upright for a day, decant it gently, and give it time in the glass.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Aldo-Conterno-Barolo-Bussia-1997-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1791018313
domenico-clerico-barolo-pajana-1996
Domenico Clerico, Barolo Pajana, 1996
A Pajana from the cuvée's first decade, made by Domenico Clerico himself from the plot he prized as the most elegant, aromatic side of Ginestra. Pajana is a single plot inside the Ginestra cru in Monforte d'Alba. It sits at 330 to 340 meters facing east and south-east, on loam-heavy soil rich in active limestone, and Clerico first bottled it on its own in 1990. The name comes from the old road along the top of the hill, an ancient pass between Monforte and Serralunga. Clerico started small. His father grew grapes on a small farm and sold them to the cooperative until Domenico and his wife Giuliana took over in 1976 and started making their own wine. Today Giuliana carries the estate forward with the team that always worked alongside them (and yes, there's an asteroid named after Domenico). For anyone who wants to see where a modern Monforte classic started, this is a bottle worth opening. Stand it upright for a day, then decant it gently off any sediment.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Domenico-Clerico-Barolo-Pajana-1996-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1791018314
cavallotto-barolo-bricco-boschis-2010
Cavallotto, Barolo Bricco Boschis, 2010
The Cavallotto family calls 2010 a modern-day classic for Nebbiolo. They compare it to 1990 and count it among the historic years for Bricco Boschis. The season went the way traditional Barolo likes it: a cold winter with plenty of snow and rain, a cool and very slow growing season, then sunny days and very chilly nights from August into October, and a near-perfect harvest of very healthy fruit. In the family's own words it was less powerful than 2008 and less voluptuous than 2006, which is about as good a definition of "classic" as you'll get. Bricco Boschis is the Castiglione Falletto hill the family owns outright, with calcareous marl at nearly 300 metres. This cuvée blends three parcels there: Colle Sud Ovest, Vigna Punta Marcello and Vigna San Giuseppe. Fashion has never changed how it's made. It ferments on indigenous yeasts. When Gildo Cavallotto picks out a great vintage, it's worth listening: he has kept weather records in the San Giuseppe parcel since 1970.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Cavallotto-Barolo-Bricco-Boschis-2010-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York_f5cd587a.jpg?v=1791018365
gaja-barbaresco-sori-san-lorenzo-2004
Gaja, Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo, 2004
Most single-vineyard Gaja gets bought young and drunk too soon. This 2004 Sorì San Lorenzo has already spent two decades in bottle, so the waiting is done. It's Nebbiolo from one of Gaja's named Barbaresco vineyards, and those single-site bottlings are part of why the name carries so much weight. Angelo Gaja took over from his father in 1970 and revolutionized Italian winemaking. A mature bottle from one of these sites shows you where all that ambition was headed. Stand it upright for a day before opening, decant it gently off any sediment, and give it time in the glass.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Gaja-Barbaresco-Sori-San-Lorenzo-2004-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1791018386
