Francois Pinon, Vouvray Brut Non Dose, 2012

Get 10% off purchases of 12+ bottles of wine. (Use code 10OFF at checkout.)
Rainy conditions throughout the Loire in 2012 produced higher acid fruit great for making well-structured sparkling wine. With zero dosage, this dry, lush yet lifted expression of Chenin from 45 year old vines shows pure notes of spiced pear, apricot, custard, pepper and crushed stone. With its salty finish this wine cries out to be paired with food. Try it with duck or pork rillettes on toast, smoked trout salad, or baked creamy cheeses like brie and camembert.

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

100% Chenin Blanc. Pinon makes two brut sparkling wines, both of which are made with the méthode champenoise and from estate parcels of flinty clay soils over the classic Vouvray tuffeau (soft chalky limestone). The later-harvested,top-quality fruit goes into this zero-dosage bottling to allow for a better balance in the final wine. The vines for both average 45 years old and have been certified-organic since 2007. The fruit is harvested manually and goes through a rigorous three-step sorting process. The clusters are gently and slowly pressed whole, and juice flows by gravity to tanks below. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in tank and lasts 4 to 6 weeks. The wine is racked into old tonneaux and steel tanks for 2 to 3 months of aging on the fine lees. It is then lightly filtered and bottled for its second fermentation.

Why I love Francois Pinon, Vouvray Brut Non Dose, 2012 (staff review)

One word: flowers. The light, delicate florality characteristic of Chenin Blanc comes to the fore here and makes for a lovely, refreshing wine that's perfect as an apéritif.
