In 2017 he bought an old stone cantina and a set of old-vine parcels in Amandi, the steep heart of Ribeira Sacra above the river Sil, and spent the next few years rebuilding abandoned terraces before his first vintage in 2019. His vines sit around two villages, Amandi and Doade, on granite and slate slopes pitched as steep as 45 degrees, and some are 80 to more than 100 years old. Everything is farmed organically and by hand, up and down the steps.

Mencía leads, with Garnacha Tintorera, Brancellao and Caíño alongside, plus a little Godello and Palomino. Damm ferments with native yeasts in steel, then gives the wines about a year in two- and three-year-old Burgundy barrels, with minimal racking and very low sulfur. Look for site names on the labels, such as Cazoga, Seoane and Clos Ladredo, and expect fresh, savory reds that are more about texture and place than power.

One of Ribeira Sacra's quietly thrilling new names. Martin Damm — a Danish therapist-turned-importer-turned-winemaker who spent years selling Burgundy and serious Spain to Denmark — bought a small stone cantina and a handful of old-vine parcels in the Amandi sub-region in 2017 and bottled his first commercial vintage in 2019. He works one-man-show style, no enologist, no shortcuts, vinifying each plot separately. This cuvée — 'the vineyard that used to belong to the house' — comes from a tiny parcel of roughly 100-year-old vines next to the old stone house in Cazoga, a granitic site at 350 meters. Predominantly Garnacha Tintorera (around 95%) with Mencía, eleven months in well-used Burgundy barrels. Salty, savory, gloriously specific — Mencía treated with Pinot Noir intuition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Adega-Damm-Amandi-La-Vina-Que-En-Su-Dia-Era-De-La-Casa-2020-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1777474164
adega-damm-amandi-cazoga-2020-750ml
Adega Damm Amandi, Cazoga, 2020

The wine of the house — literally.
