Bart

Domaine Bart is one of the bedrock families of Marsannay, the northernmost village of the Côte de Nuits, and an unexpected source of grand cru Bonnes-Mares and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, thanks to a family connection to one of Burgundy's great old estates.

The Barts are related to the Clair family, and when the historic Domaine Clair-Daü was divided in the 1980s, part of its vineyards, including parcels in Bonnes-Mares and Clos de Bèze, came to the Bart domaine. Siblings Martin and Odile Bart have run the estate since 1982, Martin in the vines and Odile on the business side, and the younger Pierre Bart now looks after the cellar. Today the domaine farms around 21 to 22 hectares, most of it in Marsannay, with a string of lieux-dits such as Les Longeroies, Champ Salomon, Clos du Roy and the Finottes monopole, plus Fixin, including the premier cru Hervelets, and Santenay.

The wines are almost all red Pinot Noir, with a little white and Marsannay rosé. Whole clusters are used in some cuvées and not others, and new oak varies by cuvée. Expect classic, restrained Burgundy: red fruit, fine tannins and a stony edge, with the grand crus built for the long haul.

A hectare of Bonnes Mares — one of the Côte de Nuits' great Grand Crus — farmed by a family better known for Marsannay, which is exactly why this bottle is worth your attention. The vines came to Domaine Bart through the legendary Clair-Dau estate, and the oldest of them were planted in 1922, so this is old-vine Grand Cru fruit from a domaine whose name doesn't carry the markup of the Chambolle aristocracy. The Barts farm on organic principles without bothering to certify; Pierre Bart runs the place today alongside his mother Odile and uncle Martin, the sixth generation of the family in Burgundy. Now a decade on from the vintage, this is a mature bottle ready to show what Bonnes Mares does — power and structure with perfume over the top. If you've been priced out of this hillside, Bart is the way in.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Bart-Bonnes-Mares-Grand-Cru-2014-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789722069
