Chateau L'Arrosee

L'Arrosée no longer exists as a label, which makes every bottle a small piece of Saint-Émilion history. For decades it was one of the côtes' insider favorites: a small estate on the western slopes making refined, long-lived wine with an unusually high share of Cabernet.

The estate was already listed among Saint-Émilion's premiers crus in 1868, when it belonged to Pierre Magne, a minister of Napoleon III. The name, meaning "watered," is said to come from an underground spring on the property. For years the grapes went to the local cooperative. Pierre Rodhain bought the estate in 1938, and his son François, who ran it from the late 1950s until 2002, equipped a cellar and began bottling everything at the château. The Caille family then took over and invested heavily, until Domaine Clarence Dillon, owner of Haut-Brion, bought L'Arrosée in 2013 and merged its vineyards into Château Quintus. 2012 was the last vintage.

The vineyard covered about 10 hectares of clay and limestone, planted to Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc making up roughly half. The wine was fermented in concrete, aged in new oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect soft textures, pure fruit and an elegant, classical frame. Bottles still in circulation are fully mature.

Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion from an estate first documented in 1868 under Pierre Magne, a minister to Napoleon III.
