Chateau Sigalas Rabaud

Sigalas-Rabaud is the smallest of Sauternes' First Growths and still a family property: just 14 hectares on a gentle south-facing slope in Bommes, a short walk from Château d'Yquem.

The estate was once part of a much larger Rabaud. Henri de Sigalas bought it in 1863, and in 1903 his son sold off most of the land (today's Rabaud-Promis) but kept the best part, the gravelly hill the family called "the jewel of Sigalas." Descendants of the Sigalas family, the Lambert des Granges, have run it since around 1950. Laure de Lambert Compeyrot joined as technical director in the mid-2000s and now manages the estate and makes the wine.

The vineyard is gravel over clay, near the Ciron stream whose autumn fogs bring on botrytis, and is planted to about 85% Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a trace of Muscadelle. Pickers go through the rows in several passes, and the wine is aged in barrel for well over a year. Alongside the grand vin there is a second Sauternes, Lieutenant de Sigalas, and dry whites, including a pure Sémillon. Sigalas-Rabaud is known for freshness and finesse rather than sheer weight, which is why it ages so gracefully: older bottles trade sweetness for notes of caramel, dried fruit and tea.

The smallest of all the 1855 classed growths, and here it is at half a century old. Chateau Sigalas-Rabaud is a Premier Cru Classe in the commune of Bommes — just 14 hectares on a gravelly, south-facing rise — planted overwhelmingly to Semillon with a little Sauvignon Blanc and a trace of Muscadelle, and run by the Lambert des Granges family since 1950. The sweetness comes from botrytis, the 'noble rot' that shrivels berries on the vine and concentrates them, with pickers going through the vineyard in successive passes. 1975 was a vintage that paid off for the patient: a dry autumn meant the rot arrived slowly, and the estates that waited made rich, balanced wines that have aged very well. Assuming it has been well stored, a Sauternes of this age has traded some of its sweetness for savory complexity — caramel, dried fruit, a note of tea. Stand the bottle up, decant off the sediment, and serve it well chilled.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Chateau-Sigalas-Rabaud-Sauternes-1975-Dessert-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1786391409
