Chereau Carre

Louise Chéreau will happily admit that Muscadet is great with oysters. She just wishes the world would stop there. Her family has spent at least three generations proving that Muscadet is one of France's true wines of terroir: it can age, and it belongs with a lot more than shellfish.

The Chéreau-Carré story starts after the Second World War, when Bernard Chéreau bought Château de Chasseloir in 1953. It's a property with a 15th-century tower and a plot of vines that has passed the century mark. When he married Edmonde Carré, she brought Château l'Oiselinière into the family, and the domaine took both names. Bernard was among the first to champion the richer, lees-aged "sur lie" style (family lore says he invented it, which is hotly contested). His son, also Bernard, turned the focus to the individual vineyards and was an early backer of Muscadet's single-village Crus Communaux. Louise joined in 2014.

The range is a lesson in Muscadet's soils. Schist at Chasseloir gives the classic saline, citrusy, cutting style. Granite in Clisson makes broader, creamier wines with riper fruit. Orthogneiss at l'Oiselinière lands somewhere in between, with tension and lift. Look especially for the old-vine Comte Leloup du Château de Chasseloir, and don't be afraid of older vintages: these wines age slowly and beautifully.

Old-vine Muscadet from one of the appellation's standard-bearers. The Comte Leloup du Chateau de Chasseloir is sourced from the oldest plot at the Chereau-Carre family's flagship estate, with vines that have crossed the century mark, sitting at the boundary of Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine and Chateau-Thebaud. Fermented and aged sur lie in the traditional Sevre-et-Maine manner, the 2019 carries the extra weight and salinity that ancient roots and long lees contact bring. Six years on, it has shed any baby-fat citrus and moved into a more mineral, faintly honeyed register. The Comte Leloup du Chateau de Chasseloir comes from century-old vines at Chereau-Carre's flagship estate in Saint-Fiacre-sur-Maine, fermented in stainless and aged sur lie before extended bottle rest. The 2014 has had eleven years to evolve, and reviewers consistently note how slowly these wines age, still showing tension and lift well into their second decade. Chereau-Carre's Le Sillon de Braudieres comes from the family's Chateau-Thebaud holdings on the Clisson granite, and the 2018 vintage offers ripe-edged but tense old-vine fruit.
