Clos Lunelles

Clos Lunelles is what happens when the owners of one of Saint-Émilion's top estates turn their attention to the next village over. Gérard and Chantal Perse, of Château Pavie, bought the property in 2001 and make it with the same ambition as their grands vins, on a site that shares Saint-Émilion's best rock.

The vineyard sits on the Sainte-Colombe plateau, the highest point in Castillon and a direct extension of Saint-Émilion's limestone plateau, a few kilometers from Pavie itself. It covers 8.5 hectares of clay and limestone, planted to about 80% Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, and the vines are mature. The estate was once called Château Lapeyronie, then Clos Les Lunelles, before settling on its current name.

The work is meticulous: green harvesting and leaf thinning, hand-picking and sorting, fermentation started by native yeasts, about five weeks on the skins, malolactic in barrel and then 18 to 24 months in oak, with no fining or filtration. The result is classic Perse: deep-colored, ripe, round and concentrated, but with the freshness that limestone brings. It's a strong argument for looking beyond the famous names on Bordeaux's Right Bank.

The Sainte-Colombe plateau is the highest point in Castillon and a direct geological extension of the Saint-Emilion limestone plateau - the same rock, a few kilometers east, at a fraction of the fame. Clos Lunelles sits on it, 8.5 hectares farmed by the Perse family of Chateau Pavie, and it is made with the same ambition: hand-picked and sorted, fermented with indigenous yeasts, five weeks on the skins, malolactic in barrel, then 18 to 24 months in oak with no fining or filtration. The blend is Merlot-led at around 80%, with the two Cabernets making up the rest. 2016 was one of Bordeaux's great recent vintages, a dry summer relieved by timely September rain, which gave wines with ripe fruit and unusually fine-grained tannins. Now a decade on, this is drinking beautifully while keeping plenty in reserve.
