Dalia

Serbian natural wine from a winemaker with a Champagne biodynamic pedigree, working in a corner of the Balkans most drinkers have never heard of: the Negotin Valley, in the far east of Serbia near the Danube and the borders with Romania and Bulgaria.

Dalia is the label of Kristina Lukić, a Serbian winemaker who studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Udine in Italy and honed her craft in Chile, California and New Zealand, as well as at Marie Courtin in Champagne, where she learned biodynamic farming. Meeting Negotin growers at a trade fair in France, she was taken enough with their wines to move to the region in 2021. She started out helping at Vinarija Raj in the village of Rajac, known for its historic stone wine cellars, and Raj let her vinify some of its grapes under her own name; she still makes the wines there while planting vineyards of her own, mostly to native varieties.

The approach is low-intervention, and the range mixes local grapes with outsiders. Splet (Serbian for 'blend') pairs Gamay with the Balkan red Vranac, and whites such as Traminac and Riesling round out the range.

Here's a wine that came out of left field for us — and stuck. Dalia is the project of Kristina Lukić, a Serbian winemaker who studied oenology in Udine, worked vintages from Chile to New Zealand to California, and eventually came back home to the Negotin Valley in Serbia's Timok region to make wines on her own terms. "Splet" means "blend," and here it's a juicy, food-loving mix of roughly 80% Gamay and 20% Vranac — one a Beaujolais classic, the other an indigenous Balkan red — co-planted and co-fermented for a wine that lands somewhere between a fresh cru Beaujolais and something distinctly its own. Bright red berries, crushed violet, peppery spice, and a savory streak that keeps you reaching for the next sip. A genuine discovery from a corner of the wine world barely anyone is paying attention to yet.

Vinum USA, Inc. Kristina Lukić studied viticulture and oenology at the University of Udine, then worked harvests in Chile, Spain, California, New Zealand and Champagne before building Dalia in the Negotin Valley. That's Serbia's far east, running along the Danube beside the Romanian and Bulgarian borders. Crna Tamjanika is one of the local varieties that give the region very specific, recognizable wines. For now she buys from local growers who, with her encouragement, are bringing organic farming back to their vineyards. Brut Nature means no sugar is added to smooth the edges, so what's in the glass is the grape and the place, which is exactly what her low-intervention approach is going for. It's a real discovery for anyone who likes their sparkling bone-dry and a little off the beaten path.
Vinum USA, Inc.
