Delagrange

Domaine Delagrange is a long-established Volnay family estate in the middle of a quiet revolution. A new generation has taken over the cellar, and the wines have quickly become more perfumed, more transparent and more exciting.

The Delagranges have been growers in Volnay for at least six generations. Didier and Hélène Delagrange took charge of the domaine in 2003, and their son Alexis joined in 2017, after working in the New World, and has made the wines since the 2022 vintage. The family farms about fifteen hectares across the Côte de Beaune, from Aloxe-Corton to Meursault, with roughly six in Volnay itself, including premier crus such as Clos des Chênes and Champans. Old vines just outside the Volnay appellation line go into the domaine's own Bourgogne.

Alexis's changes are small ones that add up: cover crops kept through the winter, close attention to soil health and picking dates, and a gentler hand in the cellar. The reds now lean toward red fruit, silky tannins and a saline finish, and the Bourgogne and Hautes-Côtes bottlings are some of the most rewarding wines in the range.

Delagrange's old vines sit around the geological fault line between Volnay and Pommard, where a few hundred feet can take you from Volnay's perfume and delicacy to Pommard's power — and Alexis Delagrange is increasingly interested in showing that difference rather than his own stamp. The family has been in Volnay for six going on seven generations, but 2022 was the real changing of the guard: Alexis took over from his father Didier and set about gentler fermentations, less extraction and more infusion, a little more whole cluster, and larger barrels and concrete instead of small oak. He learned from his father and also from Thomas Bouley, Olivier Lamy and Jean-Marc Vincent, and the wines have moved fast since. 2023 handed Burgundy a warm year and a generous crop, so the serious growers dropped fruit hard to keep things focused; the reds are perfumed and aromatic with more concentration than their easy charm lets on. He took over from his father Didier with the 2022 vintage, six going on seven generations of Delagranges in Volnay, and has changed almost everything since: higher hedging and different pruning, fewer passes with the plow, gentler fermentations, less extraction and more infusion, more whole cluster, and larger barrels and concrete in place of small oak. None of it is radical on its own; taken together in Burgundy it changes a wine completely. 2024 was a punishing vintage — April frost, then relentless rain and mildew, and some of the smallest crops growers have ever made — but what came through is cool-toned and floral, modest in alcohol and long on charm.
