Denis et Didier Berthollier

Berthollier is a top producer with 50-year-old vines growing on varied, stony, mountain sites. The Berthollier brothers manage their vines with a minimum of inputs (no insecticides, fungicides, or weedkillers), growing grass between the rows and their winemaking focuses on allowing the terroir to speak. They use only indigenous yeasts (and minimal sulfur), and rack and bottle following the lunar cycle to keep the wine clear without any manipulations. They even vinify fruit from the different soil types separately.

But despite their great terroir and hard work, the Berthollier’s wine is priced for everyday drinking. It’s one of those wonderful but rare opportunities to get a wine at an everyday price that you can open without considering the cost, but that you can take the time to think about if you're in the mood for something more contemplative.

The name is literal. In November 1248 a vast section of the limestone cliff of Mont Granier broke away and buried the villages below, and the field of shattered rock and gravel it left behind is exactly where Apremont's vines grow today. That rubble drains hard and fast, which is why Jacquere - the local white grape, and the only one permitted for Apremont - comes out of it so taut and stony. Brothers Denis and Didier Berthollier farm it from their base in Chignin, working certified organic and biodynamic across steep hillsides their forebears had given up as too difficult, with fifty-year-old vines, native-yeast fermentation in tank and bottling unfiltered. It is an Alpine white in the truest sense: light, bracing and built for cheese. Denis and Didier Berthollier farm their home slopes above Chignin on two distinct soils - limestone scree fallen from the cliffs above, and older glacial moraine - and plow the narrowest, most fragile rows by horse because nothing else fits. The farming is certified organic and biodynamic, the harvest is by hand in mid-September, fermentation runs on native yeasts in tank, and the wine is bottled with barely any sulfur. The result is light and mineral rather than showy, following a straight line to a precise finish. Mondeuse is late-ripening and deeply colored, with dark fruit and a real crack of black pepper - if you like a cool-vintage northern Rhone, this is the Alpine equivalent. The Granges Tissot parcels sit behind the old family barns named for the Tissots, the brothers' forebears who started farming here in 1850, and Denis and Didier Berthollier work them organically and biodynamically. The fruit is fully destemmed and macerated two to three weeks on native yeasts with no sulfur, then aged more than eighteen months split between barrel and terracotta amphora before hand bottling.
