Dirupi

Dirupi is the story of two kids from Sondrio who swam against the tide. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo Di Franco came back to the Valtellina to make wine. The two grew up playing basketball together and later both studied winemaking at the University of Milan. They started the winery in 2004 with no family vineyards and very little money, renting a handful of small, steeply terraced plots high in the Alps.

The Valtellina is Lombardy's great mountain valley, just south of the Swiss border, where Nebbiolo (called Chiavennasca locally) grows on south-facing stone terraces so steep that everything is done by hand. Dirupi's parcels sit at roughly 400 to 650 meters, some with very old vines, and the partners learned much of their craft from the elderly growers who used to farm them. They farm organically, with several wines now certified, and the cellar is in a historic palazzo in Ponte in Valtellina.

The range climbs from the bright, juicy Rosso di Valtellina "Olé!" to a Valtellina Superiore blended from many plots, and on to single-vineyard bottlings from the Grumello and Inferno subzones. There is also a Sforzato made from partly dried grapes and a Nebbiolo sparkling rosé. Across the board, this is Alpine Nebbiolo: fresh, perfumed and lighter on its feet than Barolo, with real mountain energy.

This is the easiest way into Dirupi, and into mountain Nebbiolo in general: a Rosso di Valtellina with some vines up to 100 years old. Olé comes from 1.5 hectares of plots at 400–450 metres, on soils of sand, silt and clay. Fermentation is on locally selected yeasts. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco grew up together in Sondrio. After enology degrees in Milan they came home and pieced together 18 ancient terraced sites so steep that they named the estate after them (Dirupi means "cliffs"). Everything is certified organic. Vines that old don't usually turn up in the kind of bottle you'd open on a weeknight, and that's exactly the sort of find we love. Pour it for the Barolo drinker who hasn't found Valtellina yet.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Dirupi-Rosso-di-Valtellina-Ole-2024-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789569634
dirupi-metodo-classico-dosaggio-zero-rose-2020
Dirupi, Metodo Classico Dosaggio Zero Rosé, 2020
Most people know Nebbiolo as a serious red. This is the same grape from the Alps, made as a traditional-method sparkling rosé with zero dosage, so no sugar is added to soften it at bottling. It comes from Dirupi, the Valtellina estate run by Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco. After earning enology degrees at the University of Milan, the two took on 18 ancient vineyard sites. The name means "cliff," and it fits: their terraces climb to 650 metres, held up by hand-built stone walls about 1,000 years old. A bone-dry mountain Nebbiolo with bubbles isn't something you see every day. If you already like Dirupi's reds, this 2020 shows you another side of the house, and it's a fine bottle to pull out when the Champagne crowd thinks they've tried it all.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Dirupi-Metodo-Classico-Dosaggio-Zero-Rose-2020-Sparkling-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789569636
dirupi-valtellina-superiore-2022
Dirupi, Valtellina Superiore, 2022
If you love Nebbiolo but have only drunk it from Piedmont, this is the bottle that shows you what the grape does in the Alps, and it's a much easier way in than most of the famous names. Dirupi's Valtellina Superiore is 100% Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo. It's grown on terraces in the Grumello and Inferno subzones at 450–600 metres, on sandy, acidic moraine soils. The name means "cliff," which gives you a fair idea of how steep these terraces are. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco grew up together in Sondrio, working the harvest every autumn as local kids do. After earning enology degrees in Milan, they came home and took on 18 ancient vineyard sites. The terraces are held up by hand-built stone walls, all the work is done by hand, and everything is certified organic. Inferno is the steepest, hottest-sounding of the valley's subzones, and this is a single-vineyard bottling from Vigna Guast within it, sandy gravel topsoils draining fast and big rocks in the vineyard soaking up the day's heat to soften the cold mountain nights. Dirupi — the name means "cliff" — is the work of Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco, childhood friends from the valley who went off to study enology in Milan and came home to piece together 18 ancient vineyard parcels across Grumello, Inferno and beyond. That's the story of the modern Valtellina in one label: young people choosing to farm terraces that are far too steep to be worth farming, and making wines of real seriousness from them. Even so, it's a dry wine, not a sweet one. Think of it as the Alps' answer to Amarone, made from the grape behind Barolo. Dirupi's version comes from vines up to 100 years old, grown at 600–650 metres on sand, silt and clay. The vines are farmed organically and entirely by hand, on terraces held up by stone walls built about 1,000 years ago. Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo di Franco grew up together in Sondrio and came home after studying enology in Milan. They named the estate Dirupi, "cliff," after the extreme high-elevation alpine terroir.
