Domaine de Piaugier

Domaine de Piaugier is a good argument for looking beyond Châteauneuf: a family estate in the village of Sablet, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, making Grenache-based reds with more lift than heat, plus a genuine oddity or two.

Sablet takes its name from sable, sand, and the village's sandy soils sit alongside clay, chalk, flint and gravel in the domaine's many small parcels. Jean-Marc Autran's great-grandfather, Alphonse Vautour, built the cellars in 1947; Jean-Marc made his first wine in 1985, and he and his wife Sophie now run the estate, with their daughter Maude representing the fifth generation. They farm about 30 hectares: roughly 12.5 in Sablet, 3.5 in Gigondas and the rest in Côtes du Rhône, with vines that are mostly decades old.

Everything is picked by hand and vinified parcel by parcel, and the reds, apart from the Côtes du Rhône, are bottled without fining or filtration. The range runs from La Grange de Piaugier Côtes du Rhône, red and white, through the Sablet red and a barrel-fermented Sablet white, to a Gigondas and small-parcel bottlings such as Ténébi, a rare all-Counoise wine. Grenache leads, with Syrah, Mourvèdre and others in support, and the house knack is blending so that Grenache never bullies its partners. The wines are elegant, savory and easy to love.

Sablet takes its name from sable — sand — and that sandy topsoil over clay and chalk is why this Côtes du Rhône Villages drinks with lift instead of heat. Jean-Marc Autran is the fourth generation at Piaugier, farming 30 ECOCERT-certified organic hectares out of the village itself, 12.5 of them in Sablet, on vines between 35 and 60 years old with yields held around 40 hl/ha. Grenache leads the blend with Syrah and a little Mourvèdre; the fruit is hand-picked parcel by parcel, fermented on natural yeasts under close temperature control, then given roughly two years in used barrel and concrete tank — unusually patient élevage for a wine at this level. Autran's real gift is blending, keeping Grenache from bullying everything else, and the result is a Southern Rhône that stays elegant and eminently drinkable.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Domaine-de-Piaugier-Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages-Sablet-2022-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1784386880
