Domaine Marc Roy is tiny, traditional, and quietly making some of the best village-level Gevrey around. Cuvée Alexandrine is made 100% from tiny "millerandage" grapes, or shot berries, which give much higher solid to liquid ratios; it is not made every vintage. Burghound loves it!

"A ripe and ultra-fresh nose offers remarkable complexity with a broad ranging nose of plum, violets, underbrush, sandalwood and humus nuances. There is excellent concentration and power to the highly energetic medium weight flavors that brim with an abundance of mouth coating dry extract where a touch of minerality adds lift to the balanced and refreshing finish. This is an opulent wine."

Alexandrine Roy is a badass. No two ways about it. Since she took over the family domaine in 2003 the wines have gotten better and better. She continues to buy faster and faster motorcycles. Alexandrine is in charge of everything except working on the tractors–her father does that. She does the vine-growing, the wine making, sales and export and also finds time for a consulting job in Oregon at Phelps Creek Winery. This may have paid for the yellow motorcycle. She has four hectares that she treats like her garden. The hectares are all in village plots, but very well situated and with incredibly old vines. Her wines drink like premier crus. She is a great grape grower and very skilled winemaker. Her wines are transparent, pure, elegant and refined–wines of great precision. This is an estate that makes the most of their fine yet modest holdings.

"A more complex and spicier nose of both red and dark berries is trimmed in discreet yet easily perceptible wood. Somewhat curiously given the fruit from which this is made, the palate impression of the middleweight flavors is not super-dense, indeed this isn’t more concentrated than the Clos Prieur (though by no means dilute). There is however fine balance and this should age effortlessly. I would add that while it’s obviously still early, this cuvée is almost always the best in the range but good as it is, that may not be true in 2022."

"The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvee Alexandrine debuted in 2005 and is a special selection that Alexandrine makes from millerande berries. Just four barrels are produced, two of which are new. The nose is initially reticent, but it opens or perhaps more accurately explodes after 30 seconds with raspberry preserve, dark cherries and sous-bois aromas. The palate has a silky smooth entry lent volume and presence by the oak that is neatly entwined with the wood. It builds nicely in the mouth with just a hint of tobacco infusing the finish that is persistent and satisfying. This is well worth seeking out. I encountered Alexandrine Roy’s wines at their UK importer’s tasting in London – one of those pleasant discoveries that never fail to brighten up the day. She is the 4th generation of the Roy family to farm their holdings that mostly cluster around Gevrey-Chambertin and she seems to be virtually a one-(wo)man band doing everything herself at the domaine. This is a small domaine of around four hectares, the fruit entirely de-stemmed and fermented with natural yeasts." -Neal Martin
