Edouard Duval

Way back in 1095, the priory of Saint Eulalie was founded by the Benedictine monks of the Cluny Abbey, the same order that brought winemaking to Burgundy and indeed much of Europe. Moving north to Champagne probably felt very natural to these monks: the clay-limestone soils found up and down the Côte d’Or — imbuing Pinot Noir with both elegance and concentration — stretch up to Champagne’s most southerly subregion, working exactly the same magic.

Edouard Duval’s grandfather, Roger, acquired the 28-hectare estate in 1950, drawn to the site’s soils (rich in ancient marine fossils), exposition (southeast-south-southwest), and altitude (300m above sea level). Ever since, the Duval family has been quietly crafting wines of place mostly for local consumption; they’ve only been recently exported. But wow, we are glad to have found them!
