Far Mountain

Far Mountain is built on a simple, contrarian bet: that some of California's greatest wine potential lies not on the valley floors but in remote, old, dry-farmed vineyards up in the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains.

The project belongs to Chilean winemaker Rodrigo Soto and his wife, Mai Errazuriz, who started it in 2018. Rodrigo has an unusually deep résumé in organic and biodynamic farming: he introduced biodynamics at Matetic in Chile, made wine at Benziger in Sonoma, led Veramonte's conversion to organic and biodynamic viticulture, then served as head winemaker at Quintessa in Napa before turning to Far Mountain full time.

The focus is on mountain sites in and around the Moon Mountain District, dry-farmed, with growers moving toward organic and biodynamic methods. Fission Cabernet comes from terraced vines planted in 1972 at Alta Vista; Montecillo, first planted in 1860, grows Cabernet in red basalt and rocky red clay; and the Myrna Chardonnay comes mainly from dry-farmed Bald Mountain vines planted in 1972.

These are not blockbuster California wines. The Cabernets are fresh, savory and firmly structured, and the Chardonnays lean mineral and saline rather than buttery. Rodrigo says Fission gives you "the old flavors of Cabernet," a few rough edges and bright, fresh acidity.

Myrna comes from Bald Mountain, a vineyard tucked into the second-highest peak in the Mayacamas at roughly 1,800 feet — high enough that the cool air and mineral-rich soils keep this Chardonnay tight, precise, and saline rather than rich and buttery. Far Mountain is the high-elevation Sonoma project of Rodrigo Soto and Mai Errazuriz, who came to this corner believing the mountains could rival California's best. This is mountain Chardonnay built on tension and freshness. That basalt gives the wine its signature: iron, graphite, and a rocky tannin structure that reads the geology straight off the hillside. Rodrigo Soto and Mai Errazuriz make this in a high-elevation, cool-climate style that prizes precision over power. This is a Cabernet to take seriously.
