Mouzon-Leroux is the only specialist we can think of from Verzy, one of the great Grand Crus of Montagne. This is pretty neat, because Verzy is a rare Grand Cru that actually points northeast, so it has very cool vineyards produces wines where mineral is far out in front of fruit. All of this is enhanced through organic and biodynamic farming, and a hands-off approach in the winery -- malos are allowed to occur naturally and virtually no sulphur is used. Mouzon-Leroux is one of the elite producers who can claim membership in the Special Club.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The NV Extra Brut Solera L'Ascendant is a solera-style Champagne based on the Atavique, with vintages back to 2010. Creamy, silky and impeccable in its balance, L'Ascendant is absolutely gorgeous. Citrus peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the Ascendant a super-appealing upper register. Vinification in oak, with full malolactic fermentation, works beautifully for this wine, as does the choice to add no dosage. This is such a distinctive Champagne." -Vinous

Robert Parker

RP 91
"Disgorged in November 2019 with 1.5 grams per liter dosage, the latest rendition of Sébastien Mouzon's NV Extra-Brut L'ascendant Solera is based on the 2015 vintage and complemented by 50% reserve wines derived from the domaine's eponymous solera, established in 2010. Offering up aromas of citrus oil, white flowers, fresh hazel and macadamia nuts and oyster shells, it's medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with racy acids and a tensile, incisive profile despite the ripe base vintage. This is still quite tightly wound and will blossom with a bit of time on cork." -Robert Parker

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
