“Franc de pied” means these vines were planted without grafting—something rarely seen in the post-phylloxera world. For François Chidaine, this is more than a curiosity—it’s an exploration of what Chenin can express when left in direct contact with its terroir. Grown on the clay-limestone slopes of Bournais, this dry Montlouis bottling is pure, contemplative, and deeply mineral.
The 2020 opens with white orchard fruit, chamomile, and a saline lift. On the palate, it’s layered and textural—richer than it first appears, with notes of yellow apple, citrus peel, and wet stone. There’s no oak to distract, just quiet power and a lingering, mouthwatering finish.
It’s a wine that doesn’t shout, but rewards close attention. Perfect with simply prepared fish, aged goat cheese, or a long, thoughtful evening. Chenin Blanc as it might have tasted 150 years ago—alive, untouched, and full of soul.
