Francois Lamarche

Few families anywhere own a Grand Cru outright. The Lamarches of Vosne-Romanée own La Grande Rue, a 1.65-hectare monopole running between La Romanée-Conti and La Tâche, and for most of the past two decades the domaine has been making wines worthy of that address.

The family has grown vines in Vosne since the late 1700s. Édouard Lamarche bought La Grande Rue at auction in 1933, and the vineyard was finally promoted from Premier Cru to Grand Cru in 1992. François Lamarche ran the domaine from 1985 with his wife Marie-Blanche. His daughter Nicole joined in 2003 with a degree in oenology and took charge in 2006; from the 2018 vintage the labels carry her name. In 2021 a family split took some parcels away, leaving around seven hectares centred on La Grande Rue, Échezeaux and Clos de Vougeot, plus Premier Crus such as Les Chaumes and Les Suchots, village Vosne and Hautes-Côtes de Nuits.

Nicole moved the vineyards toward organic farming and lower yields, lightened up the extraction and cut back the new oak to no more than about half, even for the Grand Crus. The wines have changed accordingly: pure, perfumed and transparent, built on finesse rather than power, with the floral lift that makes Vosne-Romanée so seductive.
