Winemaker Tamas Kis, a former sommelier turned vineyard guardian, is devoted to organic farming and minimal intervention, allowing the unique terroir to shine. His 2022 Juhfark is a textbook expression of this rare grape—powerful, mineral-driven, and built to evolve.

Some of the most fascinating volcanic wines come from Hungary, specifically the area surrounding Lake Balaton. Somló is unique not just for its rich volcanic soils; it’s also one of the rare wine regions where only white grapes are allowed to be planted. Somlói Vandor's Furmint is lush and golden, with flavors of wildflowers, peach, dried apricot and honey, a little Chenin-esque in its frame.

Somloi Vandor is one of our favorite Hungarian producers; from an extinct volcano on the edge of Lake Balaton, it's a source for extraordinary examples of terroir-driven, indigenous Hungarian varieties, all in minuscule quantities.

Winemaker Tamas learned to make wine in Eger, home of Hungary's famous red wine, Bull's Blood, but once he set eyes on Somlò's incredible terroir, he was hooked. His farming is organic, and in both the vines and the cellars, there's minimal intervention; the wines burst with freshness and a purity unique to those winemakers who highlight a grape's true character rather than muddying it with wood or chemicals.
