The tiny commune of Ghemme, the source of Cantalupo's exquisite 2008 "Carellae," is the perfect place to back vintage Nebbiolo that won't break the bank. It has wonderful and unique terroir, with a diverse array of minerals left behind by centuries of glacial activity combined with varying amounts of sand, gravel, and rocks producing rustic and structured old-school wines that age effortlessly for decades. With time in the bottle, the tannins begin to resolve, leaving behind an immensely complex and elegant Nebbiolo that is deeply satisfying.

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2008 Ghemme Collis Carellae is a real stunner. Rose petal, mint, violets, sweet red cherries and licorice are some of the many notes that blossom in a firm, classically built wine that will make lovers of traditionally made Nebbiolos weak at the knees. Vibrant, translucent and deeply expressive, the 2008 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. I imagine the 2008 will reward readers with another 15-20 years of exceptional drinking." -Vinous

What importer Polaner Selections has to say about this wine...

Only the best grapes from the Carella vineyard are used for this bottling.
Soil is made up of moraine (glacial deposit) which is high in minerals, rocks, gravel and sand.
Harvested in the second half of October. Guyot pruning.
Grapes were destemmed and then pressed keeping the rolls of the destemmer sufficiently distant from each other in order to avoid ill treating the grape as much as possible. After the fermentation at 28-30°C, as from the second day of processing two pressings a day were carried out in order to favour the extraction of the anthocyans and the polymerised tannins from the skins, which give that characteristic velvety, sweet and at the same time austere taste to this wine.
Aged for about two years in large oak casks followed by a year in the bottle before release.
