Giulia Negri

Like many family businesses in Italy, the tradition of passing along the reigns of a winery and vineyards to the next generation has been entrenched in patriarchy for centuries. The sons or nephews were expected to take over once they were ready. Thankfully that has been changing, and in Barolo there are great examples of super talented women who've been at the helm for years now, Marta Rinaldi and Maria-Theresa Mascarello come to mind immediately.

But to be given the keys to the car, or in this case the entire family business, at the age of 24 is a very rare thing. And that is exactly what happened to Giulia Negri over a decade ago. After studying in Burgundy, and developing a love for Pinot, Chardonnay and micro climats, she returned to the family farm in Serradenari. Known for having the highest elevation vineyards in La Morra, her family's parcels also contained some forests that are prized for their truffles.

Giulia experimented with producing many different cuvées from micro parcels for several years, hoping to gain a true understanding of the special terroirs she had inherited. Then, in 2014 she officially re-launched with her own label, making Barolo, Chardonnay and Pinot using traditional winemaking methods.

Farming has always been key and she has converted every vineyard to fully organic practices, as is a soft touch in the cellar. For her Baroli she uses only large, Slavonian oak botti for aging and strives for elegance over power and extraction.

Serradenari is the hill Giulia Negri grew up on and the name of her estate, and it happens to sit among the highest vineyard ground in all of Barolo. Altitude does specific things to Nebbiolo: it slows ripening, holds acidity, and trades some of the appellation's famous muscle for perfume and precision. This is the estate's flagship and it drinks like it, with rose petal and red cherry up front, wild herbs and crushed stone underneath, and tannins that are firm and finely woven rather than blunt. 2016 was a landmark vintage in Piedmont, balanced and complete, and a decade in, this is finally beginning to unfurl. Giulia Negri's vines sit on the Serradenari hill above La Morra, among the highest ground in the zone, where the air is cooler and Burgundy's grape suddenly makes sense; she spent time in Burgundy learning how to handle it. La Tartufaia is the truffle wood alongside the vines, and it lends the wine its name; the Pinot Nero itself sits on the estate's cooler, north-facing ground. The result is unmistakably Piedmontese Pinot: red cherry and raspberry, dried rose, a savory earthy undertow, with lighter tannins and more acid snap than the Langhe usually gives you. 2017 was a warm, early vintage, which lends this one plenty of fruit and easy generosity. It is drinking beautifully right now, and it takes a slight chill well.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Giulia-Negri-Langhe-Pinot-Nero-La-Tartufaia-2017-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1783522291
giulia-negri-barolo-la-tartufaia-2016-gbcell-pvt-1
Giulia Negri, Barolo La Tartufaia, 2016

They call her the Barolo Girl, which rather undersells things. Giulia Negri farms some of the highest vineyard land in the entire Barolo zone, up on the Serradenari hill above La Morra, where Nebbiolo ripens late and keeps its nerve. La Tartufaia is the truffle wood that runs alongside her La Morra vines — the forest, not a vineyard, gives the wine its name — and the bottling is her most approachable Barolo, built more on perfume and lift than on brute force. Expect rose, red cherry, crushed herbs and an almost alpine freshness running underneath the tannins. 2016 was one of the great modern Barolo vintages, the kind that carries structure and aromatics without either crowding the other, and a decade on this is just starting to open its shoulders.
