Constantia wine was shipped to Napoleon in exile on Saint Helena and praised by Jane Austen; then phylloxera wiped out the vineyards and it vanished for nearly a century.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe estate is part of the original Constantia farm that Simon van der Stel, the Dutch governor of the Cape, established in 1685; after his death it was divided, and this was the smaller piece. In 1980 Duggie Jooste, a Cape Town wine merchant, bought it and, with the help of researchers, identified Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains as the historic grape. The first modern Vin de Constance came from the 1986 vintage. Since 2011 the estate has belonged to an international group of owners that includes, since a 2012 merger with the Stellenbosch estate Anwilka, the Bordeaux figures Bruno Prats and Hubert de Boüard. Vin de Constance is unfortified: the Muscat is left on the vine to shrivel and concentrate, then aged in French oak barrels and foudres. Expect honey, citrus peel and spice with real freshness, and decades of life.
