Lightsome

Some of the most interesting wine in Texas is being made in tiny lots by Adrienne Ballou under the Lightsome label: low-intervention, site-driven bottles from Texas Hill Country fruit that make a strong case for the state as more than a curiosity.

Adrienne started Lightsome in 2017 as a side project while working full time, and moved into her own production space in 2023. It remains a small operation, making a few hundred cases a year. Her path here reads like a wine education in itself: a first harvest in Walla Walla, a viticulture and enology degree from UC Davis, a Chevaliers du Tastevin fellowship that sent her to Burgundy, a harvest in Australia, and three years running the barrel-aging and fruit re-fermentation program at Austin's Jester King Brewery. She has also made wine for other Hill Country producers, including Lewis Wines and Southold Farm + Cellar.

She buys from Hill Country growers she trusts, and in the cellar she keeps additions to a minimum, uses no new oak and keeps sulfur low, so the fruit and the vintage do the talking. Look for Mediterranean grapes with a Texas accent (Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Mourvèdre, and white and red field blends), some grown on the granite and sandstone of the Llano Uplift.

Lightsome's first white field blend is a beauty. Adrienne Ballou, the low-intervention force behind this tiny Texas Hill Country label, co-planted worlds here: a field blend of Grenache Blanc and Vermentino grown on the granite dome of the Llano Uplift outside Pontotoc. Those Mediterranean grapes plus that unusual granitic soil give a white that's textured and savory rather than simply crisp, with floral lift and real presence. Adrienne Ballou trained at UC Davis and chased harvests from Burgundy to Australia before setting up Lightsome in Stonewall, Texas, where she makes tiny lots in an unabashedly low-intervention style. Her Montepulciano takes a grape best known from Abruzzo and gives it a Texan accent: herbal, spicy, and built to be poured with a slight chill. This is one of the most exciting things happening in Texas wine right now, and it's a genuinely fun, off-the-map red.
