Luigi Voghera

If you like your Barbaresco made the old way, with traditional macerations, big oak casks and no makeup, Luigi Voghera is a name to know: a family farm in Neive that has been doing things the same way for decades.

The Vogheras have farmed in Neive, one of Barbaresco's core villages, for as long as anyone remembers. For most of that time they made a little wine for the family while also growing grain and fruit trees. Luigi turned the farm over entirely to grapes in 1974. His son Livio runs it now, still using his father's methods, and everything is estate-bottled.

Two crus anchor the Barbaresco. Cottà, the family's oldest holding, is about three hectares in two parcels facing southwest at 230 to 250 meters, with some vines up to around 60 years old. It's a historic Neive site on bluish Tortonian marl, named among the area's top vineyards by Luigi Veronelli back in 1969. Basarin is a smaller, fully south-facing plot of under a hectare. The Nebbiolo ferments and macerates for 10 to 15 days in stainless steel, then ages about two years in large oak casks.

The range continues with Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo: honest, traditional reds from the same hands.

Basarin is one of Barbaresco's most graceful crus, sitting on the Neive side of the border with Treiso and known for high-toned, perfumed Nebbiolo rather than brute force — exactly the profile that sings in a cooler year like 2021. Luigi Voghera's holding here is under a hectare, farmed sustainably on calcareous marl and sand, and the house style is unapologetically old-school: large Allier casks rather than small-barrel makeup. Livio Voghera runs things now, keeping to the methods his father set when he turned the family's Neive farm over entirely to vines in 1974 and started bottling his own wine. Production is tiny — and the importer singles out the house for value, which is our experience too: traditional, estate-bottled Barbaresco from a named cru at a price that doesn't behave like one. If you've been priced out of classical Barbaresco, this is the door back in.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Luigi-Voghera-Barbaresco-Basarin-2021-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789808441
