Maison Maenad

Maison Maenad is the Jura seen through the eyes of a Canadian who came to learn from Jean-François Ganevat and stayed to make tiny amounts of soulful, natural wine of her own.

Katie Worobeck grew up in Ottawa and worked at a winery in Ontario's Prince Edward County and a harvest in South Africa before moving to France in 2017 to intern with Ganevat, one of the Jura's most revered natural winemakers. She launched Maison Maenad in 2019 from a house in Orbagna, in the southern Jura. The name comes from the maenads, the wild, free women who followed Dionysus, god of wine.

Her Chardonnay comes from Les Varrons, a lieu-dit she shares with organic neighbors including the Ganevat, Buronfosse and Labet families. She also works an old-vine planting of own-rooted hybrid grapes, and has made a little négociant Gamay from organic Beaujolais fruit. In the cellar she follows her mentor: spontaneous fermentations with native yeasts, whole clusters for the reds, long élevage for the whites (some of it under the voile, the Jura's veil of yeast) and little or no added sulfur.

The wines are made in very small quantities and disappear fast. Look for De L'Avant (Chardonnay from Les Varrons), Réveil Spectral (Savagnin) and Les Oubliées, the hybrid field blend.
