Maison Valette

If you think Mâconnais Chardonnay is simple, early-drinking stuff, the Valettes of Chaintré will change your mind. Their whites spend two, three, sometimes many more years on their lees in old barrels before release, and they come out rich, layered and still full of tension. This is the Mâcon made with the patience of a great Meursault.

Chaintré sits at the southern tip of Burgundy, where the Mâconnais meets Beaujolais. The family has worked here for three generations. Gérard Valette left the local co-op in 1977 to bottle his own wine, one of the first growers in the area to do so, and his son Philippe, who finished wine school in 1990, began converting the clay-limestone vineyards (roughly eight and a half hectares, all Chardonnay) to organic farming.

Harvest is by hand, often late, and fermentations use native yeasts, with little or no added sulfur and no fining. Wines can be multi-vintage blends marked with tiny lot numbers rather than a single year. Some bottlings are simply too unusual for the rulebook: the appellation tasting panel once rejected the Et Pourtant cuvée as "too atypical," so it's sold as Vin de France. The range runs from Mâcon-Villages and Mâcon-Chaintré Vieilles Vignes up to the Pouilly-Fuissé clos, Clos Reyssié and Clos de Monsieur Noly.

This is Mâcon from one of the godfathers of natural winemaking in the region: old-vine Chardonnay, farmed organically, picked by hand and bottled without fining or filtration. Philippe Valette comes by his independent streak honestly. His father was the first grower in the area to stop selling his grapes to the co-op and bottle his own domaine wine. When Philippe finished wine school in 1990, he converted the family vineyards to organic farming. The old vines for this bottle grow in clay-limestone near Chaintré, a small village at the southern edge of Burgundy where the Mâcon meets Beaujolais. Across the estate, grapes are pressed directly, fermented with native yeasts and aged in old oak. If you think of the Mâcon as a source of simple everyday Chardonnay, this bottle makes a strong case otherwise, and it does so without asking for Côte d'Or money.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Maison-Valette-Macon-Chaintre-Vieilles-Vignes-Blanc-NV-White-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1790413234
maison-valette-clos-reyssie-pouilly-fuisse-white-nv-12-750ml-nv
Maison Valette, Clos Reyssie Pouilly Fuisse Blanc, NV
A non-vintage Pouilly-Fuissé from a named clos is a real rarity in a region that sells almost everything by the year, and it comes from a family that has never much cared what its neighbours do. Philippe Valette's father was the first farmer in the region to stop selling his grapes to the co-op and bottle his own domaine wine. When Philippe finished wine school in 1990, he converted the vineyards to organic farming. The house is also patient: depending on the cuvée and the year, wines spend anywhere from six months to five years in old oak before release. Three generations of the family have worked this 8.5-hectare estate in Chaintré, a small village at Burgundy's southern edge where the Mâcon gives way to Beaujolais. If you already know Pouilly-Fuissé as a dependable white, this is a chance to try it from a grower who treats it as something to think about.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Maison-Valette-Clos-Reyssie-Pouilly-Fuisse-Blanc-NV-White-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1790413236
maison-valette-macon-villages-white-nv-6-750ml-nv
Maison Valette, Macon Villages Blanc, NV
This Mâcon-Villages comes from Philippe Valette, who is seen as one of the godfathers of natural winemaking in the Mâconnais. That makes it a lot more interesting than the modest appellation on the label suggests. Philippe's father was the first grower in the area to stop selling his grapes to the co-op and bottle his own wine. Philippe went further: when he finished wine school in 1990 he decided to convert the vineyards to organic farming. Today he farms his Chardonnay without chemical treatments. Philippe Valette's father was the first grower in the area to stop selling his grapes to the co-op, and Philippe has kept that independent streak going in the vineyard and the cellar. The Chardonnay here is farmed organically on clay-limestone. Philippe's style rests on long élevage and minimal intervention, so the site does the talking rather than the winemaker.
