Brane-Cantenac has some of the best terroir in the entire Medoc. Their largest parcel is on the famed "Plateau de Brane," where gravel can be up to 12 meters deep. This gravel is the key to the wine's exceptionally fine texture and mineral depth.

While Brane-Cantenac is a prime example of traditional, terroir-expressive Margaux, the grand vin requires about 15-20 years to hit its true drinking window. Baron de Brane is far more approachable in youth. It's still a very serious wine, but sees only 20% new oak, and is sourced from vats selected for their more open and supple personalities.

Quite simply, Baron de Brane is a second wine which puts many other grand vins from Margaux to shame.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 92
"Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Brane-Cantenac starts off a tad restrained and reluctant to show, opening out to notes of baked blackberries, plum preserves and crème de cassis with hints of cigar box and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is wearing a lot of muscular fruit with firm, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length. Needs time!" -Robert Parker

Decanter

D 93
"Dark cassis fruit notes run right through the body of the wine, the oak slightly overpowering on the attack but brought perfectly back into balance by the time you are halfway through. It's enjoyable and confident, there is plenty of character, and it stretches out nicely through the palate, maintaining interest. Accomplished winemaking."

Wine Spectator

WS 91
"A light singed alder hint leads the way here, along with light bay leaf and savory notes, while the core of gently steeped black cherry and plum fruit fills in slowly. Shows modest intensity through the finish but the flavors knit nicely."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 96
"While the wood flavors are palpable in this wine, so are the firm tannins and dense black fruit. These elements suggest a wine that will have power and great concentration while also generous blackberry fruits."
