The Miloš family bucked waves of invaders, survived wars and outlasted communism. When the trend towards chemical additives and industrial winemaking hit, it was no big deal to buck that, too. Frano has always dry-farmed grapes organically. It helps that the dry, windy vineyards don’t face much disease pressure. The wines are all made naturally, aged in large, used Slavonian oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wines are delicious and wild and not at all international in style. To export them, the Milošes have to submit samples to a political tasting panel that awards the appellation. The panel (which rates wines out of 100 points like some Balkan Wine Spectator!) didn’t approve of the Miloš wines. Maybe because they were too wild and non-corporate tasting. Or maybe because Miloš doesn’t have a great relationship with the bureaucracy. But we don't care, because Miloš makes the very best wines we've ever tasted from Croatia. They are real wines that use an indigenous grape to express a special, one-of-a-kind terroir.
