This is the rebel of the Clemens Busch GG lineup. Fahrlay comes from a steep slice of blue slate in the Marienburg vineyard—totally different from the red and grey soils nearby. And it shows.

The 2023 is sleek and intense: think cool-toned citrus, smoky stone, maybe a little sea breeze. It’s bone dry, tightly coiled, and built more like a blade than a fruit bowl. There's depth and texture here, but the vibe is cooler, more mysterious—Riesling in a leather jacket.

If you love dry Riesling with serious minerality and edge, this is your bottle. Great with richer seafood, pork with herbs, or anything that needs cutting and contrast.

Clemens, the 5th of his name, along with wife Rita, are stalwarts of biodynamics and natural wine making, a rarity in the Mosel. Situated on the diving line between the middle and lower Mosel, they've single handedly regained recognition for their home vineyard, Marienberg.

The Marienberg was collateral damage of German bureaucracy in 1971. It's 23 hectares were expanded to include 91 hectares and its reputation quickly faded. Clemens and Rita have spent a lifetime teasing out the once recognized parcels and applying their lost names. Red, grey and blue slate snake through the vineyard. Each bottle, besides being a single vineyard, is further divided by slate type with a corresponding capsule to indicate which color it was grown on.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Pündericher Marienburg Fahrlay Terrassen Grosses Gewächs is the core parcel of the vineyard, where the oldest vines are 115 years old and the berries are loose and tiny. This is generally harvested a week later than the Fahrlay. Stone and lemon have verve on the nose, almost with a lift of mint. The palate is concentrated and tender, a bundled force of lemon and salty stone. It has no frills, just direction and drive, reaching far into the saltiest stone. This is the essence of slate." -Anne Krebiehl MW

"Subtly smokier than the Marienburg. Wet stone, lemon balm, dried apricot. Delightfully juicy, with plenty of nooks and crannies to hide a bit of citrus sweetness, even something tropical like green pineapple. The shy acidity seems to hide in the shadows, its presence felt rather than seen. Elegant and firm contours, stony momentum. Goes on forever"

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

A Bowler favorite, year after year. Clemens’ only parcel of blue slate on the Marienburg, which imparts luster, florality, sizzling acids and fantastic staying power to the wine. There is some skin contact in this wine’s vinification, lending a mild tannic backbone. It’s a steely pleaseure for Riesling purists who treasure minerality above all.

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
