Nicola Gatta

Even in the context of New York’s wine culture, where we have access to a plethora of great Grower Champagnes, Nicola Gatta’s sparkling Italian wines are must-try sparkling wines.

Prosecco seems destined for brunches and mixing with Aperol, so Italy needed another wine region to compete with Champagne. They came up with Franciacorta. The concept is very promising: gravel and limestone soils at the foot of the Alps, and nestled between lakes. The Alps provide cold, fresh air, the lakes offer a moderating effect. Plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, add bubbles, and Champagne-like magic should emerge!

Well, we’ve tried and we’ve tried, and nothing has ever caught our imagination.

And we are not quite doing that here either. Sometimes, a concept is generally right, but not perfect in all its details. Nicola Gatta has taken the Franciacorta concept, and made some adjustments. He starts with some of the most Champagne-like terroir in Franciacorta, on a high amphitheater in the hills of Gussago. Then he makes the kinds of adjustments that top Growers in Champagne would be most approving of: no additives, only natural yeasts, no sulfur additions, malos are allowed to occur naturally, low or zero dosage. Wines are matured for up to 50 “moons” before release.

In the end, it’s not Franciacorta, not legally, and he doesn’t put the DOC’s name on his label. Yet he has managed to produce some of the best sparkling wines of Italy that we have ever tasted.

Nicola Gatta farms biodynamically just outside Franciacorta and deliberately bottles outside the DOCG rules, because playing by the book was never the point. Quattrocento is his traditional-method sparkler from high, limestone-rich vineyards in Gussago, mostly Chardonnay with a splash of Pinot Nero. The R19 marks a 2019 base, aged about 40 months (its '40 lune') on the lees with no added sulfites, finished Extra Brut. What you get is a mineral, chalky-cut fizz with real savory texture, a grower's answer to Champagne from an Italian outsider who does it his own way.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Nicola-Gatta-Quattrocento-Extra-Brut-R19-NV-Sparkling-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1769611586
