Adi has bred parrots for years, and the wine nods to the critically endangered Cape parrot, with part of the proceeds going to the Cape Parrot Project, which funds its conservation and research.

It comes from AA Badenhorst Family Wines, which Adi founded with his cousin Hein in 2008 on Kalmoesfontein, a once run-down farm on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg. Adi grew up on a wine farm in Constantia and spent nine years as winemaker at Rustenburg before striking out on his own. The family now farms old bush vines alongside dozens of other varieties, without herbicides. For Papegaai, grapes from more than twenty young vineyard parcels on the farm, mostly white varieties with some red, are picked by hand together and fermented on their skins with native yeasts, then bottled unfiltered with very little sulfur. The result is bright, juicy and crunchy, with red berries and a citrus snap. Serve it cool and don't overthink it.

Papegaai is Dutch for parrot — specifically the Cape parrot, South Africa's endangered native, to whom this bottle is dedicated. It's the gloriously casual table wine from Adi Badenhorst, one of the Swartland's most celebrated naturally-minded producers, working out of his Kalmoesfontein farm on the granite slopes of the Paardeberg. The recipe: a fresh, light-bodied red built from low-yielding old bush vines on the farm plus some top-tier fruit borrowed from the neighbors, with a generous proportion of white grapes co-fermented in the blend (roughly 70% white to 30% red) to keep things lifted. The result is the platonic ideal of an easy red — juicy, low-alcohol-feeling, slightly chillable, full of red fruit and a citrus snap, and built for the kind of long Tuesday dinner where the bottle disappears before you notice.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Papegaai-Red-2025-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1778338600
