Philine Isabelle

Philine Isabelle is a tiny, hands-on Barolo newcomer that brings biodynamic thinking to one of Italy's most traditional wine regions.

Philine is German, and she took a winding route to Piedmont: she studied political science before turning to wine and working at biodynamic estates including Odinstal in the Pfalz, Pranzegg in Alto Adige and Heinrich in Austria. She settled in the Langhe in 2019, first vinifying in the Rinaldi cellars with purchased fruit before moving into her own winery and gradually acquiring parcels of her own, now around 1.5 hectares.

The farming is biodynamic, and she uses tressage, weaving the shoots into arches rather than hedging them, to ease stress on the vines. Her flagship is Barolo from the Preda vineyard in the commune of Barolo, from Nebbiolo planted in 1984 on marl and sand over limestone at around 340 meters. It ferments spontaneously, ages in large 25-hectoliter casks followed by time in concrete, and is bottled without fining or filtration.

The small range also includes Langhe Nebbiolo and Langhe Chardonnay. Across the board, expect classically styled wines built on elegance and harmony rather than power, made in very small quantities.
