Gavarini Chiniera is Elio Grasso’s highest and most delicate cru, sitting at 400+ meters above sea level on chalky, well-draining soils. This exposure gives the wine brightness and finesse, especially compared to the darker, more muscular Casa Maté. In the 2021 vintage—cooler and more classically styled—Gavarini offers superb balance between fruit purity and structural backbone.

The wine opens with aromas of rose petal, sour cherry, blood orange, and a hint of mint. The palate is linear and precise, showing fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral finish. It’s a Barolo that leans more toward nuance than power, ideal for aging, yet already expressive in its youthful clarity.

Vinified in stainless steel and aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 30+ months, this is traditional Barolo with a lifted, almost Burgundian elegance. A must-have for collectors of site-specific Nebbiolo and one of the most consistently outstanding wines in Monforte d’Alba.

Left Piedmont

Elio Grasso is one of the star producers in the Barolo village of Monforte. They specialize in just one Cru: Ginestra. Ginestra is one of those great Barolo sites, like Rocche or Brunate, that face southeast, for the most part, ideal for scooping up the cool morning sun. But Ginestra stands apart for its intense concentration of limestone. It is one of only 10 Crus to be designated “Exceptional” in Antonio Galloni’s vineyard rankings.

Ginestra is itself divided into several sub-Crus, and Grasso actually releases several different Barolos from each specific site – all of which are quite deep and powerful in their own particular ways.
