Pierre Usseglio

Old Grenache is the soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Domaine Pierre Usseglio has some of the best of it. The estate's signature, the Cuvée de Mon Aïeul ("my forebear's cuvée"), comes largely from Grenache planted in 1926, fruit that gets harder to find every year.

The family story starts with Francis Usseglio, who came to the southern Rhône from Italy in 1931 and founded the domaine in 1948. His sons went separate ways: Pierre kept this estate, while Raymond set up his own, which is why there are two Usseglio domaines in the appellation. Since 1999 Pierre's sons Jean-Pierre and Thierry have been in charge, and a new generation has since joined them. They farm about 24 hectares in Châteauneuf, split into many small parcels on sand, clay, limestone and stones, plus a few hectares in Côtes du Rhône and Lirac.

The classic Châteauneuf is mostly Grenache with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Mon Aïeul, first made in 1998, is pure old-vine Grenache from parcels in La Crau, Les Serres and La Guigasse, raised without new oak, while the Réserve des Deux Frères, first made in 2000, comes from the very oldest vines and sees more barrel. These are generous, powerful wines that carry their ripeness well, and the top cuvées reward a decade or more in the cellar.

Cuvée de Mon Aïeul is Pierre Usseglio's flagship: 100% Grenache from vines between 85 and 110 years old — the kind of fruit that barely exists anymore in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The parcels sit in Les Serres, Guigasse and La Crau, across sand, clay and the famous galets roulés, and the fruit goes into the tank as whole clusters with no destemming for a long fermentation of 30 to 45 days, then twelve months in half-muids and concrete rather than new barrels. That handling is why the wine tastes like old-vine Grenache instead of carpentry. 2016 is one of the great modern Southern Rhône vintages, ripe and generous but with the acid and tannin to hold, and at a decade old this bottle from a private cellar is just hitting its stride. Decant it an hour ahead; it should drink well for another decade.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Domaine-Pierre-Usseglio-Fils-Chateauneuf-du-Pape-Cuvee-de-Mon-Aieul-2016-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1786286317
