The 2014 Horseshoe Vineyard Pinot Noir is classic Rhys—focused, savory, and built for the long haul. Horseshoe is their most structurally serious and mineral-intense site, perched high in the Santa Cruz Mountains on limestone soils, with persistent fog and a long growing season.
In the glass, the 2014 is still youthful but starting to open: crushed red cherry, cranberry, rose petal, and cool forest herbs, with undertones of wet stone, black tea, and subtle spice. There’s notable grip and acidity here—the tannins are firm but fine—and the finish hums with energy.
Fermented with a healthy dose of whole clusters, aged in mostly neutral oak, and bottled without fining or filtration, this wine is a study in transparency and restraint. Compared to Rhys’s other vineyards, Horseshoe is darker, firmer, and slower to show its full personality, but it’s also the one that rewards patience most.
Drink now with a decant and hearty fare, or hold for 5–10 more years if you want to see it hit peak complexity. Perfect with roast duck, mushroom risotto, or anything earthy and layered.
