Rhys’s 2021 Horseshoe Vineyard Pinot Noir is a study in precision and place. Grown on rugged limestone soils in the Santa Cruz Mountains, it’s one of the most structured, mineral-driven wines in the Rhys lineup—and one of the most age-worthy.

The 2021 vintage brings finely etched red cherry and cranberry fruit layered with crushed rocks, forest floor, and baking spice. It’s taut and coiled, with beautifully integrated tannins and acidity that promise a long, graceful evolution in the cellar. There's depth and intensity here, but it’s never overpowered—everything is finely tuned.

This is serious, site-expressive Pinot that rewards patience but already shows haunting clarity and detail. If you love Burgundy but crave a California Pinot with edge and nerve, Horseshoe delivers.

Perfect for: duck breast, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, or laying down for a decade and watching it unfold.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 96
"The 2021 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is redolent of macerated cherry, spice, tobacco, cedar, dried leaves, orange peel and a kiss of French oak. High-toned and sensual, the 2021 is quite open today, especially in its bouquet, but it also has the energy and overall structure to age." -Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Among the impressive array of Rhys estate vineyards, Horseshoe is a centerpiece. The 2021 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is reticent to unveil its gorgeous, ever-expanding aromas, beginning with pomegranates, cherry blossoms, violets, tarragon and a signature note of cured meat. The palate is equal parts supple, sturdy and giving, exploding into a massive finish of concentrated red fruits, crushed stones, dried flowers and fine but tenacious tannins. This is perennially one of the most impressive Pinot Noirs in California, and it demands five years of cellaring and should improve for two decades beyond that." -Matthew Luczy

Wine Enthusiast

"Baked strawberry, pastry crust and wild-plum aromas show on the nose of this bottling from a mountainside vineyard. Rounded red-fruit flavors are spiced up by hibiscus tea, cinnamon and tropical fruit flavors on the palate, which also exhibits a peppery spice." -Matt Kettmann
