Riccitelli

If your idea of Argentine wine is plush, oaky Malbec, Matías Riccitelli is the winemaker to reset it. His wines chase freshness, altitude and old vines, and he makes a point of showing that Argentina is about far more than one grape.

Matías was born in Cafayate, in Salta in Argentina's far north, and grew up in wine: his father and mentor, Jorge Riccitelli, was the longtime head winemaker at Bodega Norton. After working harvests around the world, Matías founded his own winery in 2009 in Las Compuertas, the highest part of Mendoza's Luján de Cuyo, where he has old, ungrafted vines, much of it Malbec. He also works high-elevation sites in the Uco Valley, including Gualtallary and Los Chacayes, and since 2015 has revived 1950s-planted vineyards along the Río Negro in Patagonia.

Everything is hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts, and the cellar makes generous use of concrete and clay alongside wood. The range is easy to navigate: Kung Fu is the playful, hands-off line, made in clay amphorae; The Apple Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree (a nod to his dad) is the everyday range; Old Vines draws on historic vineyards; and Viñas Extremas showcases sites above 1,500 meters. Throughout, look for energy and lift rather than weight.

The name is a nod to Matías Riccitelli's father, Jorge, one of Argentina's best-known winemakers. This vibrant Torrontés comes from 40-year-old vines at 1,000 meters in Tupungato, high in Mendoza's Uco Valley. Hand-harvested, macerated on the skins for two days, and aged in concrete eggs for six months, it balances minerality with tropical brightness: white flowers and stonefruit on the nose give way to grapefruit, guava, and kiwi with a playful green apple finish.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Riccitelli-Torrontes-The-Apple-Doesnt-Fall-Far-2024-White-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York_97b5df86.jpg?v=1788273528
riccitelli-malbec-mendoza-kungfu-2025
Riccitelli, Malbec Mendoza KungFu, 2025

Malbec with no oak, no additions and no added sulfites - fermented and aged entirely in small clay amphorae, which is about as far from oaky Argentine Malbec as the grape gets. Kung Fu is Matias Riccitelli's hands-off range, and the fruit comes from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, organically farmed at around 1,400 meters on chalky, calcareous soils that give Malbec a saline, mineral cut instead of sweetness. Grapes are hand-picked and moved by gravity into the amphorae, fermented on native yeasts with 50% whole clusters, then aged eight months in clay and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The result is bright, crunchy and floral, built on lift rather than extraction.
