Sierra Cantabria

Rioja's aging system means the winery, not the customer, does the waiting, and Sierra Cantabria is one of the families that still takes that seriously: its Reservas reach the shelf with time already built in.

The Eguren family has grown grapes in Rioja since the 1870s, and Guillermo Eguren founded the bodega in 1957 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, on the north bank of the Ebro, where the Sierra de Cantabria mountains shelter the vines from cold northern winds. Brothers Marcos and Miguel Eguren have led it for years, with Marcos as winemaker, alongside the family's other wineries in Rioja and Toro, among them Señorío de San Vicente, Viñedos de Páganos and Teso La Monja. The vineyards, around San Vicente and in neighboring Rioja Alavesa, sit on clay and limestone with plenty of stones, and the family has moved toward organic and biodynamic farming, working with homemade compost and the lunar calendar and fermenting with native yeasts selected from its own vineyards.

Tempranillo leads everything. The range runs from fresh, early-drinking bottlings through Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva to single-vineyard wines and the Reserva Única, from old vineyards, with a mix of French and American oak across much of the range. Expect polished, generous Rioja with real freshness and mature, settled tannins.

A whole vineyard gets vinified as Reserva, and then Marcos Eguren throws most of it away — Reserva Única is what survives a severe barrel selection, which is why it comes in anywhere from about 1,500 to 4,000 cases depending on what the year gave. That makes it the entry point into the Egurens' single-vineyard range, the family having spent decades arguing that Rioja deserves to be understood parcel by parcel the way Burgundy is. The fruit comes off a single contiguous vineyard of high-density trellises above the Ebro, worked and picked entirely by hand with no machinery, farmed organically and dry-farmed. It's almost all Tempranillo with a splash of Graciano, from vines past thirty years old, aged two years in Bordeaux barrels split 60/40 French and American — only 30% new, so the oak frames the fruit rather than sanding it down. And because this is Rioja, the winery has already done the waiting for you.
