Damascene has quickly established itself as a flag-bearer for South Africa’s modern wine renaissance, combining precise, terroir-driven farming with a light, elegant hand in the cellar. Their Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc comes from Stellenbosch vineyards planted in the mid-20th century—gnarled, dry-farmed vines rooted deep in decomposed granite soils.

The 2022 vintage delivers a dazzling combination of texture and tension: aromas of pear skin, quince, chamomile, and crushed rocks lead into a layered, saline palate. There’s richness without weight—an almost Burgundian frame of subtle creaminess wrapped around a bright, energetic core of citrus and orchard fruit. Natural acidity lifts the finish, leaving a long, stony impression.

This is Chenin Blanc that easily stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the Loire’s finest, while speaking clearly of South Africa’s unique light, soils, and soul.

Pair with: lobster rolls, roasted chicken, grilled peach salads, or rich seafood stews.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch comes from vines on Greywacke, shale and granite soils planted between 1972 and 1981, whole cluster pressed and aged in oval Austrianÿfoudres. This has a little more presence on the nose and is more outgoing with yellow plum, nectarine, peach skin and hints of red fruit. There is real complexity, becoming ever more minerally with aeration. The palate is very well-balanced with a little more viscosity and lees expression, lightly spiced with a vivacious saline finish. There is a sense of completeness here. Superb." -Vinous
