Pierre Péters is one of Champagne's true superstar Growers. Rodolphe Péters, the 4th generation winemaker in his family, took over the estate in 2008. The Péters family presides over some of the most coveted land in all of Champagne – Le Mesnil sur Oger, composed of mainly limestone and chalk —  we’re talking A LOT of chalk.

In fact, the soil is so chalky that some of the producers use pieces of it to write and mark on their barrels! This soil lends the wine an almost magical mineral lift that you can only get from these parcels. To perfectly balance the fruit, acid and minerality in Champagne is no trifling task, although it's one that Rodolphe Péters has mastered. Careful work in the vineyard and cellar ensures the purest expression of Chardonnay, and all of his wines go through malolactic fermentation to temper their naturally high acidities.

The Cuvée de Reserve is based off the 2017 vintage, with reserve wines from 1988, 1990, 1993 and 1995 through 2016, except ‘99 and ‘03 = 22 vintages.

Less than a decade back the grower champagne movement still seemed ‘underground’ and only in its infancy. Fast forward to today - thanks to social media, a handful of devoted importers, and more informed wine drinkers, they are finally gaining well deserved attention. If you weren’t aware of the phenomenon, a ‘grower’ is someone that owns and farms their vineyards in addition to making all their champagnes.

One of the stars that has risen is none other than Pierre Peters. Rodolphe Peters is a 4th generation winemaker in his family and took over the estate in 2008, presiding over some of the most coveted land in all of Champagne – Les Mesnil sur Oger. While driving through the Cote des Blancs, it’s difficult not to be mesmerized by all the beautifully tended vines, but what is so special about Mesnil is the soil structure.

Composed of mainly limestone and chalk, and we’re talking A LOT of chalk. In fact, the soil is so chalky that some of the producers use pieces of it to write and mark on their barrels! How this kind of soil affects the wine is almost a magical mineral lift that you can only get from these parcels. The balancing act of marrying fruit, acid and minerality in champagne is no trifling task and Rodolphe Peters is someone that has seemingly mastered this. Careful work in the vineyard and cellar ensures the purest expression of Chardonnay and all of his wines go through malolactic fermentation due to their naturally high acidities.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The NV Blanc de Blancs Cuvée de Réserve is such a gorgeous wine. Bright, mineral and savory, with attractive tropical accents, the Cuvée de Réserve offers striking nuance and tons of class. This release is based on 2016, with reserve wines that go back to 1988. Partially blocked malolactic fermentation helps preserve a measure of freshness, but what impresses most is the wine’s total sense of balance. For readers who want to know what the Côte des Blancs is all about, without spending the money for an elite cuvée, this is the place to start. In a word: impressive." -Vinous

Robert Parker

RP 91
"Disgorged in June 2019, the latest rendition of Péters' NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Cuvée de Réserve offers up a lovely bouquet of citrus oil, pear, pastry cream, dried white flowers, hazelnuts and crushed chalk. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant, with ripe but racy acids, a delicate pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish. As usual, this is an immensely refined Champagne that exemplifies the timeless style of this Mesnil-based Chardonnay specialist." -Robert Parker

Decanter

D 90
"Grande Réserve is a blend of four Côte des Blancs terroirs (Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant, and Oger) with 20% reserve wines and a 2015 base. Very calcareous and complex, the nose offers notes of lemon, chalk and spring flowers. There is lots of tension and energy in this cuvée, which seems more vertical than horizontal."

Wine Spectator

WS 92
"Fragrant, with floral and mineral accents, this vibrant blanc de blancs shows tropical hints of passion fruit and guava layered with salted almond and honey notes. Finely knit, featuring a lasting, delicate finish."

Wine Enthusiast

WE 90
"This is a beautifully balanced selection that's crisp and laced with taut apple and citrus flavors. It has a rich texture, intense fruit and a tight minerality, which gives it structure and the potential for bottle aging."

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
