Tenute del Cerro

Fattoria del Cerro is the largest private producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and proof that a big Tuscan estate can still make honest, characterful Sangiovese. It takes its name from a centuries-old Turkey oak, a cerro in Italian, and it is the flagship of Tenute del Cerro, the wine group owned by the Italian insurer Unipol, which also has estates in Montalcino, the Val di Cornia and Umbria.

The property covers some 600 hectares in the hills around Acquaviva, in the commune of Montepulciano, with more than 180 hectares of vines at roughly 250 to 350 meters. The soils are old marine deposits of clay, sand and fossil shells. Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, makes up more than half the plantings. Because the vineyards face in so many directions, the team can vinify parcels separately and pick the best lots each year, which keeps the wines consistent from vintage to vintage.

The range climbs from Rosso di Montepulciano and Chianti Colli Senesi through several Vino Nobile bottlings to the single-vineyard Antica Chiusina. The Rosso is fermented in stainless steel and spends a few months in large Slavonian oak casks before release: bright, cherry-scented Sangiovese made for the table rather than the cellar.

If Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the wine you put away, this is the one you open on a Tuesday, and it comes from the largest private producer of Vino Nobile in the appellation. Fattoria del Cerro calls its Rosso di Montepulciano the "gateway" to the town's wines, and they're clear that it isn't a junior Nobile trying to pass for the real thing. It has its own identity. The grape is Sangiovese, which Montepulciano calls Prugnolo Gentile, and the estate's hills are Pliocene sediment: clay and sandy loam mixed with calcareous marine soils full of fossil shells. The vineyards are spread across four hamlets and face in many directions, so the team can pick the best fruit for whatever kind of year it was. A bit of trivia: the estate is named for the cerro, the Turkey oak that fills the hill woods around Acquaviva. You don't have to wait to enjoy it.
