They start, like many Timorasso, a bit closed, lots of reduction, hiding their true colors. Extra time in the bottle will alleviate some of this, but so will a long decant. Once the veil is lifted, it changes by the minute, and there are few things that compare to this wine's dizzying complexity and array of textural components.

Oozing with lemon, honeydew, drops of sunlight, honey, salt, wax, hay, baking spices, mineral pool water, lees. Silky, oily, and sharp all at the same time, but leaner and crisper than many other examples from Colli Tortonesi. By day two, it's exploded with warm sunshine and toasty bits of crust, super salty, egg cream, yeasty, phenolic, and intensely bright in the mid-palate with a warm hug around the finish. Without it, we would probably have no Timorasso today. The few plots that survived phylloxera and the world wars were ripped out in the 1950s due to the grape's enormous labor and financial inputs—money that just wasn't available to poor farmers in a bulk wine region. But Tantéi was a rare plot farmed for personal consumption of the owner's family, and whose financial output was not a factor in keeping it; the quality was. Enrico Mandirola's father bought it decades ago, and Walter Massa took cuttings to replant his own initial vineyards. 100 years of history in a bottle!

This wine demands time and patience. If you can put it away for another 3 years, do. If you must drink it now (we did and it was incredible), then it needs a long decant to shine. It has more of everything—spicy yellow fruit, sharp steely acidity, powdery phenolics, toasted hazelnuts, acacia barrel, sarsaparilla, mushrooms, potted earth—probably due to the age of the vines and the wild diverse DNA throughout the vineyard.

It starts out intense and powerful, but on day three it was just insane. It's got that Scarpa magic, where they just coax the absolute best out of varieties others tend to disregard. It opens up without the overtly reductive notes of many Timorasso, but needs at least 20 minutes for its character to start to bloom. The aromatics are decidedly earth and mineral, beyond a waft of white blossom—fruit and flowers don't bother stopping by. The nose is just salty, spring water, and leads to wax, chalk, crushed sea shells, and slight hay on the palate. It's the texture that takes the cake, though—perfectly balanced, with a forceful acidity that bursts like a fireworks show as it hits your mid-palate, but then finishes in pure finesse, silky, smooth, and salty.

Timorasso is the only white grape Scarpa grows, across two plots in their single estate Poderi Bricchi vineyard.
