Eloi Durrbach planted these north-facing limestone slopes beneath the Alpilles in 1973 and farmed organically from day one; when the local appellation moved to cap Cabernet at twenty percent, he walked away from it, which is why one of the south of France's great reds wears a humble IGP Alpilles label. The method has not changed: whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, then more than two years in foudre with minimal racking. At ten years old this is where Trevallon drinkers wait for the wine to arrive, primary fruit giving way to anise, licorice, cedar and dried herbs with the tannins settled. It grows on the same north-facing limestone slopes as the famous rouge, farmed organically since the estate's beginning, but the blend could not be more different: Marsanne leads by a wide margin, with Roussanne, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay, Clairette and a whisper of Muscat filling in around it. Each variety is fermented and raised separately in barrel and demi-muid for about a year with minimal racking, then blended. After two years of extreme drought, rain finally returned to the Alpilles in February 2024, and the harvest ran variety by variety from late August to late September. His children Ostiane, Isoline and Antoine have run the domaine since his death in 2021, unchanged: whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts, then more than two years in foudre with almost no racking. 2023 was drier even than the drought year before it, under three hundred millimeters of rain, and the harvest ran from Syrah on September 4 to Cabernet on the 19th, finishing at a restrained thirteen percent alcohol.
