Vieux Chateau Champs de Mars (Famille Amoreau)

Vieux Château Champs de Mars is a small Right Bank estate that went its own way long before that was fashionable, and in 2022 it found natural heirs: the Amoreau family of Château Le Puy, the biodynamic Bordeaux estate a few kilometers away.

Régis Moro founded it in the early 1980s with his wife Thérèse and son Sébastien, on clay-limestone slopes in the Castillon appellation, just beyond Saint-Émilion. He farmed organically from the start, gradually adding biodynamic treatments, and in the cellar he did very little: spontaneous fermentations without temperature control, no new oak, gentle bottling. While Bordeaux was chasing extraction and new barrels, that made him an outlier, admired in some circles and overlooked in others.

The wines are Merlot-led, with Cabernet Franc. The classic Champs de Mars is raised in cement; Johanna, named for Moro's granddaughter, comes from his oldest vines, including a parcel planted in 1904, and gets a longer élevage in used barrels. When the Amoreaus, longtime friends of Moro, bought the vineyards and winery, they also took on a stock of older vintages that had rested untouched since bottling, which is why mature bottles from this estate are still around. Expect savory, honest claret, light on its feet and true to its limestone.

A mature, sensibly priced Bordeaux made by Regis Moro, whose Castillon estate was later (2022) acquired by the Amoreau family of the cult biodynamic estate Chateau Le Puy. This Cotes de Castillon blends mostly Merlot with Cabernet Franc from Moro's vineyards, including century-old parcels, farmed organically with biodynamic practices and aged in cement tanks. Now two decades on, the great, warm 2005 vintage has softened into exactly what mature Bordeaux should be: resolved tannins, savory depth, and secondary complexity you simply can't rush.
