Severiano Sastre was a founding member of the village cooperative, and in 1992 his son Rafael started the bodega with his own sons, Pedro and Jesús. Jesús Sastre now leads the farming and winemaking. The family owns around 47 hectares around La Horra and Roa, much of it old Tinto Fino (the local Tempranillo), and the oldest plantings, from before 1960, go into the Crianza and the top bottlings. The family has not used chemical fertilizers or pesticides in decades and prunes by the lunar calendar, but has never sought organic certification.

The range runs from a young-vine Roble and the old-vine Crianza up through Pago de Santa Cruz, Regina Vides and Pesus, a tiny-production cuvée whose name joins Pedro and Jesús. This is Ribera in its big, ripe, generously oaked form, with real concentration from old vines and enough freshness to carry it. The Crianza comes off old Tinto Fino, the local name for Tempranillo, with parcels running up to sixty years of age, farmed without chemical fertilisers, herbicides or insecticides for more than three decades and pruned by the lunar calendar; the family has simply never bothered with certification. Rafael Sastre founded the bodega in 1992 with his sons Pedro and Jesus, working land his father Severiano farmed before them. Fourteen months in French and American oak, seventy percent of it new, give it the sweet-spice frame Ribera drinkers expect, and it rests another ten months in bottle before release.
