Yves Cuilleron

Yves Cuilleron took over his family's domaine in Chavanay, at the northern end of Saint-Joseph, in 1987 and built it into one of the northern Rhône's go-to names. The range is wide: Condrieu, red and white Saint-Joseph, Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Péray, plus delightful Collines Rhodaniennes wines from just outside the appellations. Terraces are worked mostly by hand and ferments use native yeasts. The style is not too modern, not too traditional, just focused, clean and pure.

Condrieu from the heart of the appellation, made by one of the three houses — with Vernay and Guigal — that effectively define the place. "La Petite Côte" isn't a lieu-dit; it's Cuilleron's blend of south and southeast-facing terraces above Chavanay and Verlieu, old-vine Viognier rooted in muscovite-rich granite (a different soil from the biotite granite under the estate's Chaillets bottling, and it shows in the wine's lift). Everything here is hand-work: the terraces are too steep for machines, yields are cut back by debudding, and the fruit comes in by hand. In the cellar it's deliberately unhurried — spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, malolactic in barrel and large cask, then nine months on the lees with no bâtonnage and no racking, which builds texture without ever coating the fruit in oak. Worth remembering how close this grape came to vanishing: in the 1940s the entire world's Viognier amounted to about six hectares, nearly all of it in Condrieu. Now the appellation runs to roughly 217 hectares, and this is a benchmark example of why it came back.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Yves-Cuilleron-Condrieu-La-Petite-Cote-2024-White-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789137641
yves-cuilleron-vignes-da-cote-collines-rhodaniennes-2024
Yves Cuilleron, Vignes d'a Cote Collines Rhodaniennes, 2024
The name says it all: "the vines next door" — parcels that sit right alongside the classified appellations of the Northern Rhône, farmed by one of the region's benchmark Syrah houses but sold without the appellation's price tag. This is the entry level of the Cuilleron range, and it drinks like a first-class introduction to what the 50 miles between Vienne and Valence do with Syrah: pure varietal fruit off granite and alluvial soils, no makeup. Vinification is refreshingly old-fashioned — parcel by parcel, indigenous yeasts, partial destemming, about three weeks macerating in open tanks — and the élevage is deliberately light-handed, seven months split half in barrel and half in tank so the fruit stays front and center. The estate has been in Verlieu, a hamlet of Chavanay just south of Condrieu, since 1920, and Yves's son Edgar now runs the winemaking, one of the generation taking over the Northern Rhône's leading names. Drink it young, within three or four years, while the fruit is singing — that's the house's own advice.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0125/1518/0601/files/Yves-Cuilleron-Vignes-da-Cote-Collines-Rhodaniennes-2024-Red-Wine-Flatiron-Wines-Spirits-New-York.jpg?v=1789137643
