The estate's Goldtröpfchen Grosses Gewächs always comes from its oldest parcels: ungrafted vines on terraces that were never rebuilt, rooted in red, grey and blue slate broken into small pieces. The vineyard itself is a huge amphitheatre on the outer bend of the Mosel, facing southeast round to southwest. It's warm enough that rosemary and lavender grow among the vines, and a strip of woodland above keeps them supplied with water. Andreas Adam had restarted his family's dormant estate only nine years earlier, at 21. The Grosses Gewächs on this label was his own call, more than a decade before the estate joined the VDP. Adam describes his Piesport wines as powerful and wild when young, and we've always seen the GGs as wines built for the long haul, so this is a chance to drink one with real age on it.
