This Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut from A. Bergère is a grower Champagne sourced entirely from Chardonnay vineyards in Avize and Oger, two prized villages in the Côte des Blancs. Though labeled NV, this release is based on the 2019 vintage, with a small percentage of reserve wine for balance.

Fermentation is done in stainless steel, and the wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation. It is aged on the lees for around 3 years, then disgorged with a low Extra Brut dosage (typically around 3–4 g/L), to keep the focus on minerality and purity.

Expect a laser-cut Blanc de Blancs, with aromas of lemon peel, green apple, crushed chalk, and just a touch of creaminess from lees aging. The palate is brisk and focused, with a salty finish and fine mousse. It’s a Champagne that leans more linear and mineral than plush—great as an aperitif, but also at home with oysters or sashimi.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 91
"The NV (2019) Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru was harvested in Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Mesnil-sur-Oger. The nose brims deliciously with lemon, cold sour cream butter and raw short crust pastry. The palate is rounded with the ripeness of 2019 and thus has soft contours. It shows off butteriness, Chardonnay's lightness and creaminess along with lemony, raw short crust pastry by way of autolysis. Beautifully pure fruit is at the core and Côte de Blancs chalkiness seems to hover just below the surface. Elegant, pure, bright and yet rounded." -Antonio Galloni

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
