Biyela grew up in Mahlabathini, a rural village in KwaZulu-Natal. In 1999, after a year working as a domestic worker, she won a scholarship to study winemaking at Stellenbosch University. She had never tasted wine, and her classes were taught in Afrikaans, a language she didn't understand. She graduated in 2003 and was running the cellar at Stellekaya, a boutique winery, the next year. Harvests in Tuscany and Bordeaux shaped how she thinks about winemaking. In 2016 she started her own label and named it Aslina, after her grandmother. The estate is IPW Certified Sustainable.
